PARTICIPANT REVIEWS
From the People Who Studied Here
These are accounts from participants across the three programmes. Names and roles are shared with permission.
Siti Rahimah
Operations Manager · Kuala Lumpur
"The Reader Series gave me vocabulary I didn't know I was missing. I work in logistics and I kept encountering AI in procurement discussions without really knowing what people meant. The modules took their time on things like model training and evaluation — areas that usually get one paragraph in popular articles."

Ahmad Hafizuddin
Product Designer · Petaling Jaya
"The Studio Cohort was more demanding than I expected, which was a good thing. The weekly sessions were small enough that you couldn't hide — in the best sense. I found the written feedback on exercises more useful than live discussion, actually. It forced me to read carefully and respond carefully."
Studio Cohort · March 2025
Lim Chu Wei
Research Analyst · Penang
"I appreciated how honest the programme description was. There was no promise of a credential at the end, which I actually found reassuring — it meant the focus stayed on understanding rather than on completing something for its own sake. Twelve weeks felt appropriately long."
Studio Cohort · February 2025
Nabilah Bakri
Journalist · Kuala Lumpur
"I write about technology for a living and I found the reader modules genuinely useful — they went further into how language models work than anything I'd read before. The margin annotations in particular were well written; they often addressed the question I was just about to have."
Margin Reader Series · April 2025
Thanaseelan Kumar
Finance Executive · Shah Alam
"The Long Studio Programme was a larger commitment than I'd originally planned, but I'm glad I stayed with it. Building something over seven months — even a portfolio of exercises — is a different experience from completing a course. I feel like I actually know something now, rather than having watched someone explain it."
Long Studio Programme · January 2025
Zulaikha Mahmood
HR Consultant · Subang Jaya
"I came in not knowing what a transformer model was. I left the Studio Cohort with a much clearer picture of how the technology works and — maybe more importantly — how to evaluate claims made about it. The pre-enrolment conversation was also useful; they were honest about what twelve weeks can and can't cover."

PARTICIPANT JOURNEYS
Three Participant Accounts
Longer accounts of what brought people to Modelcraft, what they studied, and what changed.
CHALLENGE
Reading AI coverage without a framework
A science journalist had been writing about AI for a regional publication for two years but felt increasingly uncertain whether she was understanding or just translating press releases. Technical papers were inaccessible and explainer articles felt thin.
APPROACH
Margin Reader Series
She started with the Reader Series as a way to build vocabulary at her own pace. The self-paced format worked with an unpredictable editorial schedule. She used the weekly Q&A thread to ask follow-up questions about specific claims she had encountered in her reporting.
OUTCOME
More informed reporting
Over four weeks she completed the modules and found she could follow papers she had previously skipped. Her editor noticed a shift in how she framed AI limitations in her writing. She later enrolled in the Studio Cohort. "The modules did what a good textbook does — they built on each other."
CHALLENGE
Evaluating AI proposals in procurement
An operations director at a mid-sized logistics firm was regularly presented with proposals from AI vendors. He could read the cost estimates but not the technical sections. He needed enough understanding to ask sensible questions, not to build systems.
APPROACH
Studio Cohort · 12 weeks
He joined a Studio Cohort. The exercises — which asked him to read and respond to actual AI system documentation — matched his practical need. The cohort included people from finance and HR backgrounds, which made the live sessions useful for seeing how the same concepts translated across sectors.
OUTCOME
Stronger vendor conversations
By the end of twelve weeks he was reading evaluation sections in vendor proposals and forming his own views on them. He reports being able to challenge assumptions in procurement meetings that he would previously have accepted. "I can now tell when someone is being vague on purpose."
CHALLENGE
Building knowledge to inform policy work
A policy researcher in the public sector needed to develop an understanding of AI systems substantial enough to contribute to regulatory discussions. Most of his colleagues had strong views but limited technical grounding.
APPROACH
Long Studio Programme · 7 months
He enrolled in the Long Studio Programme. The seven-month timeline gave him time to connect the material to policy questions he was working on. Mentor reviews were used to check his reasoning against the technical material rather than to develop software skills.
OUTCOME
Better-grounded policy contributions
By month seven he had a portfolio of written exercises exploring AI systems across different regulatory contexts. He reports being more confident in policy discussions that mix technical and governance arguments. "The long timeline was the point — it let ideas develop rather than being rushed through."
